RETIREMENT

L - R: Nikki Lynne, Dutch, Gunther, Luke, Thor, Lora, Dolly, Max, Tom, Pammy

The Jelka Arnesen Elkhound Retirement Resort is a non-profit division of Mountain View Kennels.  "JAERR" is devoted to providing a safe and nurturing home for abandoned older (spayed and neutered) Elkhounds.  Occasionally, we will take in a younger dog and try to place him or her in a more appropriate home (see the AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION page). Each  "retiree" becomes a member of our family.

JAERR is dedicated to the memory of a very special little girl. Peer Gynt Turijelka Arnesen (Jelka)Jelkaoncouch.JPG (17236 bytes), a Norwegian Elkhound, blessed my life for 3 1/2 short years. I will always thank Marlene Oliver for entrusting me with her. She wasn't a rescue dog. I got her for a companion to love and to show in conformation, obedience and agility. I will never forget her and she will always be missed. Because of her death, I did not think I could ever get another puppy. That is when I got much more involved in RESCUE. A year after her death, after I had adopted several older Elkhounds, I created JAERR. We were granted 501(c)3 status by the Federal Government and donations made to this organization are tax deductible. There is nothing more important to me now than the issue of homeless pets. Looking for a new pet? Check out our AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION section and PETFINDER.COM as well as the shelters and rescue organizations. Please spay and neuter your pets.

You can help this worthwhile cause by choosing a pet to sponsor!

For information about making a tax-deductible donation to this resort, or to a specific resident, please contact Lora at info@mountainviewkennels.net or mail a check made out to JAERR - Mountain View Kennels, 73342 Lilac Flower Lane, Arlee, MT  59821.

Brooks

Brooks came from Calgary in Canada in January of 2005 at 5 1/2 year old. His family had turned him into the Calgary Humane Society. JNMRF Volunteer Linda Sweet got him out and Kevin Adams cared for him until he was transported here via Michael Weiler. THANK YOU ALL!!!!! Brooks is a handsome guy and has fit in perfectly.

Fred

Fred came from Florida in early 2005 after his family decided they couldn't take care of him anymore. His journey started with Cindy Elliot and ended here at the Jelka Arnesen Elkhound Retirement Resort. Thank you Cindy, Joy, Bren, Donna, Troy, Connie, Lisa, Erika, Emily, Barb, Nicole, Sandy and (of course) Pam and the John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund. Everyone that helped get him here thought this guy was a real sweetheart - and are they right! Although we were originally only fostering him for John Nelson, his placement did not work out and we are lucky, lucky, lucky enough to have him join us permanently! He gives the term "Mama's Boy" a whole new meaning.

Yarrow

Yarrow was found wandering the streets of Stevensville, Montana in August of 2006. When no one claimed her, they called us and we gladly brought her home. She had some dental problems and we had to have her teeth x-rayed. That is when we discovered that she had been shot with buckshot. She has about 100 pellets embedded in her head and upper body. Thankfully, they don't bother her. She loves to give kisses!

Cherokee

Cherokee (I've been calling her Cherry) came from Colorado when her family relocated to Washington State on September 22, 2007. At 10 1/2 she is a small and energetic girl. She was extremely timid and barely took treats from my hand. However, after 3 days in the kennel she was showing more confidence and it was time to introduce her to "the pack". She has fit right in and reminds me very much of Juri, my sweet little girl who was my 2nd Elkhound. Thanks, Stefanie, for letting her come and live with us.

Big Buddy

Big Buddy came from Maryland in October of 2007 at 11 years old. His family was going through a divorce and thought a retirement facility would be perfect for him. He is not "Big" and the reason we call him "Big Buddy" is because we also have a Beagle here named Buddy. He spends most of his time sleeping in the living room or wandering the different yards looking for a soft spot to snooze in! He is a great addition.

********************RetirementMemorials*****************

The following "retirees" have left us and gone on to The Rainbow Bridge. None of them will ever be forgotten...

Kjelhead111100.JPG (33132 bytes)Kjel Arnesen

Kjel (Shell) went to The Rainbow Bridge on February 17, 2003. He was 13 years old. He was relinquished to a shelter at 10 1/2 years old and came to us in July of 2000. His easy going personality and love of the simple things in life - a soft bed, a rawhide chewy and a scratch behind his ears, was all he ever wanted. My friend, Jeanne, transported him here from The Senior Dog House and Rescue facility in Bigfork, Montana. Thanks to Donna Allen for giving us the privilege of letting this guy live his life out in comfort with us.

Tekka and Kolti

Kolti went to the Rainbow Bridge on April 10, 2003 and Tekka joined her on October 6, 2003. They will never be forgotten.

They joined us June 30, 1999. Check out the Available for Adoption for dogs that are looking for a home. Thanks Judy, Bill, Mimi and Bert! Visit the Retirement link to learn about the other Elkhounds in our program.

Nikki Lynne

Nikki Lynne went to The Rainbow Bridge on June 8, 2004 at 15. She was relinquished to a shelter in Ohio, at 12 years old. She was given up prior to Christmas 2000, as her owner had holiday plans and did not want to deal with her. She is the sweetest girl and most feminine of my females. She and Kjel have become best of friends. Thank you Pam, Karyl, Marlene, Ron and Donna and especially the John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund for helping to get this lovely girl home for the holidays and forever, with us. Getting Nikki Lynne was a gift from God.

Chiquitaandmarlene050102.jpg (40413 bytes)Chiquita O'Neill

Chiquita O'Neill went to The Rainbow Bridge on February 2, 2004 after suffering a stroke. "One Banana for Montana" is what Marlene Oliver named the CUR run that brought this girl all the way from Texas to Montana. This is a picture of Marlene and Chiquita (taken by Vicky) enroute. She arrived home May 11, 2001. Many people , whose names I will never know, helped in transporting her. However, I can thank Marlene and Vicky, Pam, Karyl, Donna, Majie, Mary, Liese, Marilyn, Laurel, LeAnn and, of course, the John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund. It was hard to believe she was 12 years old. She was little and oh so spunky. She fit right in with Kjel and Nikki Lynne. I added the O'Neill to her name after my friend, Lois O'Neill.

Akeia102901.JPG (52065 bytes)

Akeia

Sadly, Keia is no longer with us. She was helped to The Rainbow Bridge in June of 2002. "Keia" (Keeya) was living in Washington when her family decided to give her up. She was 11 years old. Allison Sherwood contacted  Michelle Durheim of Paws Across the Northwest who put the word out. Donna Allen (You Go Girl!) left a late night message on my answering machine and by the next day I had agreed to meet Allison halfway between here and Spokane to bring Keia home. She joined us September 9, 2001. Allison could not believe how sweet this girl was - I told her that was the typical Elkhound personality. She played very well with Kjel, Nikki Lynne and Chiquita O'Neill. In the true Elkhound fashion, was very food motivated! She is missed.

Luke

Luke went to The Bridge on December 18, 2006. He came to us from Washington with a young female friend named Tipper on August 12, 2003. They belonged to Ruby Torvinen and were placed when she passed. It was an inappropriate home and as the owner was signing the euthanasia papers, I contacted her and saved these two lovely souls.  Soon after their arrival...a very handsome Gustav showed up and stole Tipper's heart. As a young spunky couple, they soon found a home of their own with Rick and Carolyn (LUCKY TIPPER AND GOOSIE!). Luke is a very handsome and dignified older gentleman and has fit in nicely. He can occasionally be found following Nikki Lynne around - but usually is a loner when out with the pack. ****NOTE****Luke has a sponsor. Thank you Kristi!!!!!We'll be seeing you...

Thor

Thor (right), went to The Bridge on January 13, 2007. He came from Nevada and arrived on May 26, 2003. He was a 10 year old junkyard watchdog who was getting consistently beaten up by another dog. A very big THANK YOU to Jodie Leggio for stepping in and getting this boy to JAERR. Thor had been tied up and it is thought mistreated - you wouldn't know it by looking at this guy today. He and Nikki Lynne are constant companions. I keep telling him that I am very lucky to have him as a resident here. He has a wonderful sense of humor and knows exactly what time meals are served. Thank you, once again, John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund, Pam McNamara, Jodie & John Leggio, Sharon Frank, Phylene Anderson, Nancy Roberts, Roz Huntly, Connie Sublette and Elaine Sehnert . By the way, that is Nikki Lynne on the left! Run free little man.

Pammy

Spammin' Pamin' is her nickname - named after a true angel, Pam McNamara. She was a stray in Las Vegas saved from Dewey Shelter by Judy White and hitchhiked a ride from Nevada with Thor and his CUR run on May 26, 2003. Pammy's age is unknown (she looks about 8) and has been diagnosed with MASTICATORY MUSCLE MYOSITIS (MMM). Clinical signs are related to abnormalities of jaw movement and jaw pain as well as progressive muscle atrophy. It was a struggle to get her to eat when she first arrived - she was very thin and had no appetite. She does have occasional relapses.  This is a chronic disease and requires daily medication. She actually prances when she walks now and smiles (she only has a few teeth) most of the time. She is a constant delight and always makes me laugh. Sadly, Spammin' lost her battle with life on April 4, 2005. There is a big hole in our hearts. She is missed...

Emmy

Emilee wasn't with us for very long. Barely 2 months. She came from Kansas via Keeshond Rescue and was horribly overweight. Although she was breathing and moving better, her little heart just gave out. Wait for us at The Bridge sweet Emilee.

Max

Max is by far, my most famous guest! I believe everyone at the 2004 Norwegian Elkhound Association of America  Specialty, held in Lawrence Kansas from April 12 - 16, met him. Words like marvelous, majestic, sweetest, best and wonderful aren't enough to describe him. Starting in Florida, he arrived in Montana on April 20, 2004 through the combined efforts of  John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund, Pam McNamara, Vicki Cody, Kathy Moore, Amy Blankenship, Candace Noneman, Shirley Reed, Karen Melton, Ron Chambliss, Eileen Kaplan, Joe Bell, Jerrie Schweizer. And a very special thanks to Virginia Sawyer. NEWSFLASH!!!!After the girls all ignored his advances, he turned his attention on one of our new boys, DUTCH. You can find Dutch and Gunther on our AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION page. As Max had been the youngest of the retirees - these true youngsters showed up and brought more excitement for the entire group. Max was diagnosed with bone cancer the first week of June, 2005. On June 30, he went to sleep and never woke up. What a great, great dog...We all miss him.

 Dolly

Dolly came to us in April of 2004 from Illinois via a very kind man named Bob Hindman who contacted us through John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund. Thank you Pam McNamara and Roxane Tyssen! It seems her Mom couldn't take care of her anymore and was going into a retirement home as well. Dolly is a bit overweight and is on a wonderful weight reduction program that includes raw meat, fresh veggies and regular exercise. She has already caught Max's eye and gets along great with everyone. Keep checking here as I will post her pictures as  she gets in shape! NEWSFLASH!!!! Dolly's weight as of June 1, 2005 is a svelte 50 lbs!!! She is moving much better and starting to play with the other retirees! Our beloved Dolly went to The Bridge on September 2, 2005. She will be missed.

Smokey

Smokey came to us in May of 2004 with the help of Terry Heenan and  John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund. Thank you Pam McNamara for letting him come HOME. Smokey is 7 years old and from Arkansas. He was born with a partial right front leg that he uses like a stump.  This boy is fitting right in and is thoroughly enjoying all of the amenities here! We lost Smokey on Monday, May 28, 2007 from bone cancer. He was a great dog.

Sevante

Sevante came from the Denver area in October of 2004. His family was downsizing and thought a retirement facility would be perfect for him at 12 years old. This guy is the youngest 12 year old I have ever seen! When he is not monitoring the Beagle's antics, he can be found swooning over Dolly.  He is a wonderful addition to our pack! Sevante died in his sleep on August 9, 2007. He is missed.

Shadow

Shadow came from Northern California  in April of 2005 at 14 years old. Without the help of Kathi Johnson, Margaret Williamson, David Owen, Lucille Johnston and Diane Schnoes, she would never have gotten here. And... for ALL THAT YOU DO FOR US, Pam McNamara and John Nelson Moosedog Rescue Fund. Shadow went to sleep the night of December 2nd, 2005 and never woke up. Her little body just gave up. See you at The Bridge, sweet one!

Dancer

Dancer came from Seattle on July 1, 2005. Her owner was moving and could not take her along. When she found out about us, she asked if we would consider letting her retire here. At 14, she was more than welcome. She pals around with Shadow and has taken over announcing meal time for Dolly. She starts barking about a half hour before scheduled feeding times - just in case we forget! Dancer left us on January 12, 2006. Cancer had taken it's toll on her little body and she had no more energy to fight. She is tap dancing at The Rainbow Bridge with Shadow and all the furbabies that have gone before her. Save a dance for me, little girl.

Bishop

Bishop came from Indiana via Pam and John Nelson Moosedog Rescue on October 18, 2005. He was originally a stray taken in by some people who noticed that he had a horrible skin condition. When they could no longer care for him, they turned him over to rescue. Pam and Linda were angels as always - scheduled bathing, medication, dietary changes and unconditional love have turned this guy's life around. Once he was healthy enough to travel, Pam brought him and Sierra to be our latest retirement resort residents. We lost "The Bish" on July 31, 2006. Much too soon...

Bear

Bear came from Northern Montana in the spring of 2005. He has some chronic health issues that requires a bit more care than he was receiving from his previous owner. Thank you for letting him come home to us Joseph and Tina.. And...thank you Donna Allen and  The Senior Dog House and Rescue for coordinating the transport that got Bear home with us. Elaine, you have helped us more than once - another thank you to you!  This is a very intelligent, sensitive and responsive boy. He is proving to be a wonderful "watch" dog and addition to our family. On June 14, 2008, Bear ventured to The Bridge. The 3 years he was here with us will  be remembered fondly. He was a good and noble boy who will be missed.

Mattie

Mattie came to us from Ohio via Pam and John Nelson Moosedog Rescue on September 21, 2005. At 10,  she was being abused by her owners. Thank you (again) Pam and Mindy, for all of your help! She is a delightful member of the exclusive JAERR "retirees" and has fit in perfectly. She wants a belly rub whenever you walk by her and will roll over on her back to make it convenient for you. Mattie went to The Rainbow Bridge on April 21, 2008. We miss you, little girl.

Sierra

Sierra came from Michigan via Pam and John Nelson Moosedog Rescue on October 18, 2005. At 10,  he was considered somewhat of a nuisance by his former owners and had been living in the basement before being turned over to rescue. Thank you, Mindy, for all of your help! He is a big love bug, thinks he is a lap dog and gives delicate kisses. Sierra went to The Rainbow Bridge on February 22, 2010. He was a good boy.

Mindy

Mindy came from Michigan via Pam and John Nelson Moosedog Rescue on January 9, 2007. At 11, she was considered crabby around young children and kept separated from her family before being turned over to rescue. Her previous name was not very personal nor did we think it appropriate. So, we changed it to Mindy after a rescue angel. Thank you, Mindy, for all of your help! This is a beautiful girl who is fitting in perfectly here. Dear, sweet Mindy went to The Rainbow Bridge on May 12, 2010. Thank you, Elizabeth, for helping with her journey.
